NURS 4600U – Health and Healing: Advancing Clinical Judgment Theory and Simulation

Clinical judgment is a singularly important nursing construct that occurs at the intersection of critical thinking, decision-making, and critical action. As the core nursing requirement in the provision of safe, competent, ethical, and compassionate nursing practice, demonstrating sound clinical judgment is essential in preparation for independent Registered Nursing practice. Additionally, advancing clinical judgment supports learners to mitigate challenges associated with transition to practice, including role transition and reality shock. This course focuses on refining and advancing clinical judgment skills as learners progress toward their final integrated practicum placement. Using an evidence-based model of clinical judgment (e.g., Tanner’s Clinical Judgment Model, 2006), learners will engage in active learning in classroom and simulation-based components of the course in order to demonstrate nursing praxis consistent with College of Nurses entry to practice competencies (2018) in a variety of patient situations.
