General information

The Frazer Faculty of Education offers the opportunity for eligible students to receive a co-operative education designation on their Educational Studies degree with the completion of the required courses.

Co-operative education provides many benefits to students including the opportunity to:

  • Gain valuable practical experience.
  • Earn competitive salaries during work term placements that partially offset the cost of their education.
  • Clarify career objectives, and develop valuable networking that will enhance opportunities for full‐time employment upon graduation.

Studies have shown that students in the same academic program who graduate from a cooperative education stream have lower debt loads and are employed faster and with higher starting salaries than those who graduate from the regular stream.

The co-operative education offered in the Faculty of Education has been designed to conform to the Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL Canada) guidelines.

Applying to Co-operative Education

Students normally apply to the Co-operative Education program directly out of secondary school or after their first year of study and should meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum cumulative grade point average (cGPA) of 3.0 (B) at the time of application
  • Clear academic standing, and
  • No record of a major misconduct
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

Information on the application process is available from the Experiential Learning Office.

Work terms in Co-operative Education

Co-operative Education placements normally start in Year 3 after students have completed EDST 2310C – Foundations for Success in Co-op  and all other prerequisites for EDST 3310W – EDST Co-op Work Term I

A co-op placement can vary in length from four to 16 months (one to four consecutive work terms). Students that successfully complete a minimum of three (up to a maximum of five) co‐op work terms are eligible to receive the Co-operative Education designation on their Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Educational Studies degree. All completed co-op work terms appear on a student’s academic transcript.

While the Faculty of Education cannot guarantee a co‐op placement, assistance, advice, and coaching are provided to all students enrolled in the Co‐operative Education program by the Experiential Learning Office.

Students must have their preferred schedule of work terms approved by Educational Studies Advising to ensure it is compatible with the scheduling of required courses in their field of study. Additionally, students must return to full-time studies for a minimum of one semester after completing their final work term.

Degree requirements

Students wishing to participate in the Co-operative Education program must meet the admission requirements outlined above.

Once accepted, they will be required to successfully complete the following courses:

Note:

Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 to remain in the co-op program. In order to graduate from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Educational Studies program with the Co-operative Education designation, students must satisfy all Educational Studies degree requirements  and all co-op requirements.
