BUSI 2510U – Communicating with Data

The ability to communicate with confidence when pitching ideas or presenting insights is crucial for business, technology, and data professionals. A core element of this is the capacity to leverage visuals (e.g., graphs, maps, images) in order to present data-driven evidence claims. This capacity is increasingly recognized to be an important communication skill, as communicating with data can make presentations more trustworthy, engaging, and indicative of analytical reasoning.

This course will introduce students in the early years of their program to visualization methods and practices that can be used for effective data-driven communication. Students will learn how to reduce the cognitive burden that often arises from communicating complex and abstract topics, but without doing so at the expense of novelty, creativity, or authority. Students will survey a variety of visualization examples and methods, and learn how to make use of them through weekly hands-on tutorials and creative projects, refining their design, speaking, and presentation skills in the process.
