NURS 2703U – Health and Healing: Mental Health Nursing Theory and Practicum

The focus of this course is on concepts and principles of mental health nursing. Common mental health challenges are discussed, with an emphasis on nursing strategies for assessing, promoting, maintaining, and restoring mental health. Students are also provided with opportunities to apply concepts of mental health nursing to the care of individuals experiencing acute and long-term mental health challenges.

Practice occurs in a variety of mental health settings including acute care, long term care and community facilities. Nursing assessment skills, such as the mental health status assessment, and nursing intervention strategies, such as therapeutic communication, are facilitated. Students will complete 144 hours (inclusive of course orientation) within a clinical practicum experience (may include practice in clinical settings and simulation). Students will also gain a greater awareness of the self and the role of the therapeutic use of self in the provision of care.
