BIOL 2060U – Fundamentals of Microbiology This course provides an introduction to key and current concepts in microbiology. Topics include bacterial cell structure, function and genetics, metabolism, growth and cultivation, prokaryotic classification and systematics, microbial diversity, microbe-host interactions and applications. An introduction to viruses and to eukaryotic pathogens will be included, and strategies for dealing with infectious microbes through antimicrobial therapies will be integrated throughout. Key features of the immune response to infection will be introduced. An understanding of the immune system and its responses to infection is important to understanding interactions with microorganisms.
