BIOL 4090U – Applied Forensic Entomology

This course explores the scientific principles underlying the use of insects and other arthropods in forensic investigations. Topics include insect taxonomy and life cycles, ecological interactions during decomposition, succession patterns, and the estimation of postmortem interval using entomological evidence. Students will examine factors influencing decomposition processes and insect development, including temperature, environment, and toxicological agents, and will learn to apply entomological data to forensic casework. Laboratory and case studies emphasize species identification, collection and preservation of insect evidence, and interpretation of developmental data in legal and investigative contexts.
