Governance

Ontario Tech University was established by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Act, 2002.

This Act sets out the university’s governance structure which is comprised of the Board of Governors and the Academic Council.

Under the Act, the Board of Governors is responsible for governing and managing the affairs of the university, with the Board designating authority to the Academic Council and also consulting with the Academic Council on specific matters. These matters include establishing and regulating academic standards, curriculum policies and procedures; and overseeing development of new programs, program reviews, and academic policy changes.

The university’s bylaws implement the Act by adding more specifics to the roles and responsibilities for the Board of Governors and Academic Council.

The university has a Chancellor, who is the titular head of the university and confers all degrees, honorary degrees, certificates and diplomas on behalf of the university. There is also the President, who as the university’s Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chancellor has supervision over and direction of the academic and general administration of the university.

The university’s governance system is supported by the Office of the University Secretary (the Secretariat).

The Secretariat is dedicated to supporting an evolving, inclusive and thriving governance framework that meets the needs of the university today and into the future. The Secretariat provides guidance and advice to all areas of the university to enable the ongoing development and implementation of good governance practices which help advance the university’s strategic priorities.

In addition to its advisory role, the Secretariat facilitates the university’s internal elections, administers undergraduate academic appeals, and oversees the university’s policy framework

Further information about the university’s governance structure is available on the Office of the University Secretary’s website.
