SSCI 2000U – Introduction to Social Science, Humanities and Arts

What does—and what should— an education in the liberal arts signify today? How do social science, humanities, and STEM-based disciplines shape the creation and transmission of knowledge? This course involves readings, lectures, activities and assessments intended to provide solid academic grounding to pursue these inquiries expressly. At the same time, the course invites students to consider how the approach they take to their undergraduate studies is implicitly answering these questions already. Integrating historical, philosophical, and sociological perspectives, among others, students engage in case studies, in-class activities and field trips, exploring ideas and applying abstract theories to concrete, real-life challenges, featuring both broad public policy and personal ethical dimensions. The course aims to foster informed, critical self-reflection upon the meaning and value of undergraduate university education in the liberal arts, social science and humanities, by foregrounding collaborative learning and independent thinking.
