EDUC 5503G - Decolonizing Education Indigenous education has existed for time immemorial. Since the arrival of settlers in what is currently called Canada, Indigenous approaches to teaching and learning have been disrupted, although not eradicated, through various means. Indigenization and decolonization provide a path forward to re-centre Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing to challenge Euro-Western dominance in education inside and beyond formal schooling contexts. Informed by decolonizing theory, this course examines historical and contemporary Indigenous education, emphasizing experiences in Canada. Students will also examine how technology is enabling opportunities for Indigenous students to learn in diverse settings, as well as for non-Indigenous peoples to learn from Indigenous communities.
