NUCL 5600G - Future Role of Nuclear Energy

The course will provide students with a thorough understanding of the nuclear (power) industry. What are the main global trends in the industry, why these are manifesting now and what is likely to transpire in the next 35 years. This includes an understanding of nuclear technologies across the world and likely advances. In addition to technology, industry assessment includes: social licence, communications, risk management, finance, waste management, geopolitical trends, local political imperatives and the role of nuclear energy in the broader mix of energy supply (mostly electricity generation). Students will be able to cogently (and respectfully) argue both sides of the debate on the future role of nuclear power, especially as it relates to low carbon energy supply. Using Ontario as an example, the nuclear industry and its likely future role will be evaluated in several other jurisdictions, e.g., India and China.
Credit hours: 3
Prerequisite(s): Enrolment in a graduate degree program, or completion of ENSY 1000U and SSCI 1470U.
