ENGR 5925G - Control and Operation of AC Drives


The main objective of this course is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the design, modeling and control of electric drives. The course starts with a thorough review of the fundamentals of power electronics, machines and control theory in the world of drives as applies to research and development. AC machines are introduced using the concept of rotating magnetic field and comparisons to the DC machine. Details of operation, construction, design and control are then presented for induction machines, permanent magnet synchronous machines and switched-reluctance machines (SRM). Rail, electric and hybrid vehicle application examples are emphasized.
