POSC 3102U – Race and Racism in Political Culture

Political culture is understood as the common values, norms and traditions of a particular country or place. Political culture in terms of race and racism refers to the ways those values, norms and traditions can reinforce ideas of race and perpetuate racism. This course analyzes the political, economic and cultural development of race and racism in political discourse. The theoretical grounding of race and critical race theory will be explored and this will build to a discussion of race in a specifically Canadian context. The issues of immigration and multiculturalism, which form much of the Canadian political discourse surrounding race, will be the focus of this discussion, but international examples will also be used to provide some perspective.
