NUCL 5180G - CANDU Operational Safety and Abnormal Events

Graduate students study the Safety Report, and the resultant design and operational requirements that govern the safe operation of nuclear power plants, with specific reference to CANDU units. Emphasis is placed on understanding the assumptions used in the analyzed accident scenarios, the consequences of the assumptions used in the analysis not being in place when the accident occurs, and the potential for operating outside the design and impairment limits. Events studied include Small and Large Break LOCAs; major failures in the Fuel Handling, Moderator, Shutdown Cooling, Steam and Feedwater Systems; Loss of Regulation; and Electrical Failures. Problems and/or projects that reflect plant design and operating experience are used to enhance and verify graduate-level learning.
