Bachelor of Arts (Social Science and Humanities)

General requirements


The following degree requirements must be met by students in order to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities.

Requirement I


120 credit hours.

Requirement II


At least one program in FSSH as a major, and all required courses listed for that major as per the Academic Calendar.

Requirement III


The following first-year required course:

Requirement IV


At least one research methods course as required by the major program(s).

Requirement V


At least 12 courses (36 credit hours) at the senior level (i.e., 3000- or 4000-level courses).

Requirement VI


To ensure breadth of learning across disciplines, students are required to successfully complete 8 courses (24 credit hours) outside of their major program area and its requirements, including:

  • At least 2 FSSH 1000-level foundational courses (6 credit hours) leading to majors in different disciplines; 
  • and 3 courses (9 credit hours) at the 2000, 3000, or 4000-level. 

The additional 3 courses (9 credit hours) may be selected from any program as permitted by your major program area.

Double Majors and specializations within a major program that include at least nine credit hours from another program will count as this breadth requirement.

Please consult with Academic Advising to ensure these requirements are being met.

Courses in Requirement VI must:

  • not have the same course code as your major (e.g., major codes are: COMM for Communication and Digital Media Studies; PSYC and FPSY for Psychology and Forensic Psychology; POSC for Political Science; LGLS for Legal Studies; CRMN for Criminology and Justice; LBAT for Liberal Studies); and,
  • not be listed as a requirement for your major (unless listed as exempt by a program’s specialization);
  • not be an SSCI course in research methods and data analysis, practicum, honour’s thesis, internship, and/or independent study


Requirement VII


No more than 42 credit hours may be at the 1000 level.
