Degree requirements
The MA program has two options: a non-thesis option consisting of eight courses and a major paper, and a thesis option consisting of six courses and a thesis. Both options of the degree program require a total of 30 credit hours. Graduate students in both the non-thesis and thesis programs should be able to complete their studies in approximately 24 months of full-time study. See thesis, project or major paper for corresponding policies and procedures. Students in the thesis option take one additional reading or special topics elective course and develop a thesis. The potential thesis topic is to be selected and approved in consultation with the candidate’s research supervisor and supervisory committee. Once the thesis has been completed, students undergo an oral examination to defend their thesis. The thesis is defended before the supervisory committee and one external examiner.
