Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers a wide variety of engineering programs designed to meet the needs of industry. Our university’s engineering programs offer a solid foundation in basic sciences and mathematics, as well as applied courses such as solid mechanics, controls, computer-aided design, robotics, mechatronics, telecommunications, power systems, software design, electronics, and artificial intelligence.

Our engineering students have the opportunity to participate in an internship program to allow them to gain experiential learning by spending 12 to 16 months working in industry following third year.  Students can also participate in two- to four-month co-op placements.

Each student benefits from the university’s technology-enriched learning environment on a campus equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and fully networked classrooms.

First-year Engineering program

The first-year Engineering program provides first-year engineering students with a plan for successful transition into university life and support them throughout their first year. Students have a dedicated first-year academic advisor, weekly newsletters, and access to a variety of programs and services to help them navigate their first year.

First-year engineering students are required to complete the following common first-year courses:

Semester 1

Semester 2

The First-year Engineering Success Program  provides first-year engineering students who need extra time to adapt to university with an opportunity, before the start of second year, to complete first-year courses for which they have not obtained credit, to upgrade their grade point average and academic standing, and to improve their preparation for studies in subsequent years.

Faculty and staff

Faculty and staff at Ontario Tech University come from diverse academic backgrounds and are excited to share their knowledge and life experience with students. Research

The faculty’s research focuses on flexible and high-performance manufacturing, automotive engineering, energy, active control of vibration and sound, nonlinear dynamics and chaos, efficient and environmentally conscious engineering, robotics, mechatronics, computer-integrated manufacturing, micro-electromechanical systems, electronics, communication, power distribution, power converters, health informatics, knowledge discovery, sensor networks, pervasive systems, embedded systems, and software engineering.

Teaching and research facilities

Among the numerous engineering teaching and research laboratories and facilities on campus are: the OPG Engineering Building, with heavy and industrial-scale equipment and undergraduate labs; the Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE), a state-of-the-art automotive research facility including a full climate-controlled wind tunnel; the Energy Research Centre (ERC), with unique capabilities in geothermal, hydraulic, hydrogen, natural gas, solar and wind energy technologies, the Clean Energy Research Lab (CERL) pioneering the development of clean energy technologies; and the Integrated Manufacturing Centre, an industrial-grade, flexible manufacturing facility with advanced manufacturing and automation technologies. Our newest facility, the Software Informatics Research Centre (SIRC), is an advanced research facility that will provide interdisciplinary research and teaching space along with a new Engineering Design Studio for our students. To help meet industry’s need for engineers with strong business skills, the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science has developed several combination Engineering and Management programs.

Graduate programs

Doctor of Philosophy programs are offered in Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Master of Applied Science and Master of Engineering programs are available in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Also, a Master of Engineering and graduate diploma program are available in Engineering Management.
