EDST 4560U – Supporting Multilanguage Learners in Elementary Schools


This course focuses on the culturally and linguistically diverse learner, known as a Multilanguage Learner (MLL), at the elementary level (K-8) in the context of Ontario schools. It applies theories of multiple language acquisition and learning to an understanding of a wide range of learners with unique needs. Social justice, trauma-informed, CRRP and EDI lenses will be consistently utilized throughout this course. This course will also address key language acquisition theories and strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking, informed by the Ministry of Ontario Language Arts and ELL Curriculum. In addition, students will examine best practices in differentiating language acquisition learning through digital literacy and UDL integration.
