EDST 4120U – Games and Simulations for Learning

Digital games and simulations are a fast-growing category of educational technology with vast potential for interactive learning. In this course, students will explore the intersecting principles of game and instructional design to uncover how games designed for both educational and commercial use can support learning across diverse contexts. Examining the affordances and limitations of various game and simulation genres, informed by current research in the field of games and education, the course will foster a nuanced understanding of the role these immersive experiences can play in a range of learning environments. Students will have the opportunity to critically analyze the impact of games and/or simulations in their educational area of interest, and develop evidence-based strategies for meaningfully integrating games and simulations into learning. Applying inquiry to practice, students will design, prototype, and critique games and simulations for learning, cultivating practical insight into effective educational technologies and empowering them with practical skills for the modern learning landscape.
