ENGR 5660G - Communication Networks

This course provides a detailed technical presentation of important networking concepts and protocols used in modern communication network architecture. Descriptions of the principles associated with each OSI network layer are provided with many examples drawn from the Internet and wireless networks. The TCP/IP protocol stack will be discussed in detail with a variety of examples on its various layers. Particular attention is given to performance analysis of ARQ techniques, access methods (ALOHA and CSMA), and network delay and throughput analysis in WAN and LANs. Network addressing design (including VLSM and CIDR) is discussed in detail, and various routing methods (Distance vector and Link-state) are compared. Advanced networking protocols such as ATM and MPLS are briefly introduced.
Credit hours: 3
Cross-listed: CSCI 5300G - Computer Communication Networks  and MITS 5200G - Advanced Communication Networks .
