HLSC 1812U – Socio-cultural Perspectives on Physical Activity and Health Examining the socio‐cultural influences on physical activity and health is essential because inequalities in these areas cannot be explained by lifestyle choices alone. In addition, physical activity and health trends also have important impacts on society and culture. In this course, historical, social, political, psychosocial and economic forces that influence physical activity behaviours and health will be discussed. Demographic factors such as education, employment, income levels, ethnicity, and gender will be examined in light of their contributions to health inequalities, and access to health and physical activity resources. The bidirectional relationship between socio‐cultural factors and physical activity and health will be utilized to discuss issues such as mass sporting events, racism, sexism, and individual and community wellbeing.
