SSCI 3060U – Punishment and Society This course is a review of punishment sanctioned and undertaken by the state. It examines important philosophical questions about all forms of punishment, regulation and control. It will review the historical debates about punishment, and will map out the political struggles and cultural shifts that led to the establishment of prisons as the pre-eminent modern form of punishment. In addition, it will consider not only how prisons are administered but how they are experienced. Finally, the course will consider non-punitive responses to wrongdoing and rule breaking.
