MCSC 6040G - Modeling and Simulating Systems using Discrete Units

In this course of the MCSC program, different approaches for modeling and simulating systems using discrete units (particles, agents, lattice sites) are introduced and applied to example problems. Simulation approaches may include molecular dynamics-based approaches (including Langevin and Brownian dynamics and discrete element methods), Monte Carlo methods (including Metropolis and Kinetic Monte Carlo), lattice techniques (including master equations, lattice-Boltzmann techniques and coupled map lattices), cellular automata, agent-based modeling and smooth particle hydrodynamics. Topics may include modeling materials, biological systems, collective motion, fluid flow, traffic flow, social dynamics and granular material.
Credit hours: 3
