Governance

Ontario Tech University was established by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Act, 2002.

This Act sets out the university’s governance structure which is comprised the Board of Governors and the Academic Council.

Under the Act, the Board of Governors is responsible for governing and managing the affairs of the university, and the Academic Council makes recommendations to the board on the establishment of academic standards, curricular policies and procedures, and the regulation of such standards, policies and procedures.

The university’s bylaws implement the Act by adding more specifics to the roles and responsibilities for the Board of Governors and Academic Council.

The university has a Chancellor, who is the titular head of the university and confers all degrees, honorary degrees, certificates and diplomas on behalf of the university. There is also the President, who as the university’s Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chancellor has supervision over and direction of the academic and general administration of the university.

The university’s governance system is supported by the University Secretariat, which is a dedicated governance resource that:

Provides governance guidance and support to the Academic Council, the Board of Governors, and their respective committees;
Promotes the effective operation of the university’s governance structure;
Is committed to good governance principles and best practices;
Works with the Board, Academic Council, senior leadership and the broader university community to continuously improve the university’s governance processes; and
Is also responsible for administering academic appeals and elections.
